From non swimmers to triathletes!

The Rookie Lifeguard Awards, developed by the Royal Life Saving Society UK in partnership with Swim England, are designed to teach children valuable water safety skills while promoting teamwork and leadership. The program is structured into three main stages: Bronze, Silver, and Gold, each subdivided into levels that children can progress through at their own pace.

Age Groups and Skills Taught

  • Target Age: The program is primarily aimed at children aged 8 to 12 years for the Rookie Lifeguard Pool programme, while the broader Rookie Lifeguard program caters to those aged 10 to 15 years.

  • Skills Developed: Participants learn a variety of skills, including:

    • Survival Skills: Techniques to stay safe in and around water.

    • Rescue Techniques:  How to assist others in distress, including throwing and reaching rescues.

    • Life Support: Basic first aid and resuscitation techniques.

    • Water Safety: Understanding how to enjoy water activities safely. 

Program Structure

  • Duration: Each stage of the Rookie Lifeguard program typically runs for 8 to 10 weeks, allowing children to learn and practice skills in a supportive environment. 

  • Specialty Awards: In addition to the main awards, children can earn specialty awards in areas such as lifesaving sport, paddle boarding, and beach safety, adding variety and fun to their training.
